Dr Asim Khurshid

Consultant Rheumatologist

Dr Khurshid is a highly experienced Consultant Rheumatologist with over a decade of consultant-level practice at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, where he has worked since 2013. He is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based, and patient-centred care, taking time to understand each patient's concerns and involving them fully in decisions about their treatment.

His clinical practice covers the full spectrum of rheumatological conditions, including inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue diseases, vasculitis, osteoporosis, and musculoskeletal disorders. He is committed to delivering personalised care tailored to each individual's needs.

He has a special interest in Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) and musculoskeletal conditions, offering expert diagnosis and precise, carefully managed interventions such as joint injections.

In 2017, he established Dorset's first specialist rapid-access service for giant cell arteritis and Polymyalgia rheumatica. The service has become an integral part of local rheumatology care and has significantly reduced the need for temporal artery biopsy by utilising ultrasound as the primary diagnostic tool.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Khurshid is actively involved in teaching and research. He teaches rheumatology ultrasound nationally and internationally through programmes delivered by the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) and the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR). He has contributed extensively to research in vasculitis and polymyalgia rheumatica and has helped develop innovative concepts including the GCA–PMR Spectrum Disease (GPSD) framework and the HAS-GCA score, a clinical tool designed to support the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis.

Innovation & Research

Pioneering rheumatology services and contributing to advances in clinical care through research and innovation.

Dorset Rapid-Access GCA Service

Established Dorset's first specialist rapid-access service for giant cell arteritis and Polymyalgia rheumatica. The service provides same-day specialist assessment with temporal artery ultrasound, enabling rapid diagnosis and treatment to prevent irreversible vision loss. It has significantly reduced the need for temporal artery biopsy.

Established 2017

GCA–PMR Spectrum Disease (GPSD) Framework

Helped develop the innovative GCA–PMR Spectrum Disease concept, advancing understanding of the relationship between giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica. This framework has contributed to improved clinical recognition and management of these overlapping conditions.

Research Contribution

HAS-GCA Diagnostic Score

Contributed to the development of the HAS-GCA clinical prediction score, a validated tool helping clinicians assess the probability of giant cell arteritis at presentation and guide urgent diagnostic pathways. This tool supports faster, more accurate diagnosis.
